Deep Searches for Young Pulsars

چکیده

By 2000 there were only 10 established Galactic pulsar– supernova remnant associations. Two years later there are 16 such associations known. I discuss the work leading to this substantial increase. In particular I summarize an ongoing search project that has resulted in the detection of several young pulsars with a very low radio luminosity of about 1mJy kpc at 1.4GHz, and comment on future prospects.

Recent Discoveries of Energetic Young Radio Pulsars

The observed population of young radio pulsars has grown substantially in recent years due to a combination of large-scale surveys and deep targeted searches. Many of the pulsars are associated with supernova remnants and/or unidentified gamma-ray sources. This review summarises the state of play and looks ahead to likely advances in the near future.

Finding (or not) New Gamma-ray Pulsars with GLAST

Young energetic pulsars will likely be the largest class of Galactic sources observed by GLAST, with many hundreds detected. Many will be unknown as radio pulsars, making pulsation detection dependent on radio and/or x-ray observations or on blind periodicity searches of the gamma-rays. Estimates for the number of pulsars GLAST will detect in blind searches have ranged from tens to many hundred...

Recent Searches for Pulsars in Unidentified EGRET Error Boxes

Pulsars discovered since the end of the EGRET mission coincident with unidentified highenergy γ-ray sources are prime targets for AGILE. Both general surveys and targeted observations have been successful in finding energetic young pulsars in the plane of the Galaxy. For the latter, hard X-ray imaging followed by deep radio searches of X-ray sources is a proven route. High-resolution Chandra X-...

A 1400-MHz pilot search for young pulsars

We have used the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope to conduct a 1400-MHz (λ 21-cm) search for young and rapidly rotating radio pulsars along a 2 deg2 strip of the northern Galactic plane defined by 28◦ ≤ l ≤ 30◦ and |b| ≤ 0.5◦. This region lies close to the Scutum spiral arm which is already known to contain a number of radio and X–ray pulsars. The search was nominally sensitive to pulsars with ...

Gamma-Ray Pulsars: Modeling and Searches

Using a likelihood analysis and EGRET detections, upper limits and diffuse background measurements, we find a best-fit luminosity law L ∝ PB for the gamma-ray pulsar population. We find that roughly 30 of the 170 unidentified EGRET sources are likely to be pulsars. This is roughly twice the number of known radio pulsars which are plausibly associated with unidentified EGRET sources. We predict ...
